The Brief

At the end of last year, we were approached by Matti Neustadt, founder of Oregon-based legal tech startup V4 Final, to create a video promoting their newly developed software. Initially it seemed like the 5000 miles and 8 hours separating us would be the biggest challenge to overcome, but it turned out to be:

How can we make a video about something feature rich yet intangible, straightforward enough to fit into 90 seconds, but be convincing enough to customers and investors?

The Challenge

A lot of software product videos fail because they make the same mistake. They assume that because it’s ‘boring’ to them, that it’s boring to everyone. And being intangible as well, the solution seems to be to put the CEO front and centre, overpromising the software with dramatic music and motion graphics that are way over the top.

The Decisions

After our briefing call with Matti, we understood that whilst the software was packed with features, it was really intuitive to use. Why would we need to overhype something that already has unique features and works well?

We kept the message simple and focused on what made the software genuinely different.

Just as an aside: do you know how many lawyers send documents to the opposition without removing their privileged comments? Answer: a lot more than you’d like! V4 Final solves that issue with their privileged document feature.

The Process

In the past, we’ve made videos about many technical concepts, including industrial automation and management consultancy qualifications, but the legal sector was a new one for us. With plenty of legal input from Matti, we:

  • wrote the script and created a shot list
  • recorded a voiceover
  • built the motion graphics using the software’s own interface, so the UI felt dynamic and approachable
  • added a light touch of stock footage to ground the story in reality
  • edited everything to music to create a cohesive 90-second result

The Result

A motion graphics product video that does what the software promises to do: makes something complex feel simple.

What we’d do again

For similar product videos, we’d keep the same formula: distill the detailed, use the real interface as the visual foundation, and build credibility without overhype.
