what do
you do?

our inspiration for the podcast.

Adam only started networking in Worcestershire last year, and was blown away by the wide variety of people he got to meet. Some with job titles he was well aware of, like “systems integrator”, and some he had no idea about at all, like “ergonomic assessor”.

During a netwalking session, he met Cheryl Griffin, a doula, who was actually surprised that he knew what she did. Cheryl explained that the first barrier in getting new bookings is actually explaining what a doula actually is.

Adam had a similar experience when he met Robert Southall, a Customer Experience Specialist, which most people think is just mystery shopping. It is way more than that!

He also noticed that many of the people he met had unique approaches to industries he thought he already understood.

We’re storytellers, and after listening to so many people’s stories just waiting to be told, well, we just had to be the ones to help tell them. The “What do you do?” podcast was born. Cheryl and Robert (and everyone else) graciously agreed to join Adam in ‘the studio’ and here we are!

our approach.

We aren’t journalists. For project work, we absolutely do a deep dive into whatever the video is about, but this didn’t feel natural in a podcast setting. So we send a list of questions ahead of time just to make sure we’re covering everything, but then during recording, we just let the conversation flow. That’s how we end up talking about things like parenting, authenticity, AI, and a variety of other tangents.

One thread that came up throughout the recording sessions is family. Cheryl decided to become a doula as her eldest son was about to become a parent. Robert developed a lifelong interest in people after helping out in his family’s shop as a child. After losing her job, Vanda (the photographer) wanted to build herself a career that gave her more freedom both creatively and to spend with her young family.

We’re excited to see what other themes develop as we record more episodes!

Maybe! The format only really allows for one person per job title, and we might already have someone booked in who we haven’t revealed yet, but putting yourself into consideration can’t hurt, especially if you have a pretty unique one. Either way, we’re always curious to hear about your job!

The episodes aren’t a set length, but are usually between 40 minutes and an hour.

The areas that the podcast covers are Worcestershire, Herefordshire and the West Midlands, and any other surrounding counties.
