What Do You Do? podcast
Dr Lizzy Bernthal | Coach, Speaker, Author | Release Your Potential
Resilience is often misunderstood, but crucially important. It’s the skill that helps us to endure and overcome the most difficult challenges we face in our lives. But as Lizzy explains, we show resilience everyday, even when we get out of bed when we don’t want to.
“Resilience is not just for strong people. When facing adversity, you don’t feel resilient, but you are.“
Key Takeaways
- Resilience is about bouncing forward, not just bouncing back. We’re never the same after enduring challenges, so we should see it as an opportunity for personal development.
- Resilience is about trusting yourself to overcome adversity. Courage is when you have no guarantee of the outcome, but you carry on.
- There’s always one story that every single person has that redefines their lives until they unpick it.
The Role of Resilience Explained
Understanding Resilience: What It Is and Why It Matters
What is it that makes us carry on when we don’t want to? Or on the flipside, what it is that pushes us forward to face new challenges (and leave our familiar zone, as Lizzy explains)? Resilience. Resilience is not about being invulnerable or impervious – it’s about being able to recover from difficult personal and professional challenges. It’s about being able to face a challenge when the outcome is not guaranteed.
Resilience doesn’t stop there. It’s also about using those challenges as an opportunity for personal growth. Resilience is often characterised as ‘bouncing back’, but instead Lizzy says that instead we ‘bounce forward’, as we are never the same after facing and overcoming a challenge. Lizzy also makes the point that we are already far more capable than we give ourselves credit for. We all have the tools we need already, we just need to appreciate it. Resilience is not an inherent skill – it can (and should) be learned.
